Striking ‘Generations’ cast members sacked

WITH a storyline that seems more dramatic than the show itself, the most-watched South African soapie ‘Generations’ has come to an abrupt halt after the cast went on strike, demanding better pay and better working conditions.

“MMSV Productions, following consultation with the SABC, have today [Monday] terminated the contracts of the striking actors on the SABC1 soap drama, ‘Generations’. The termination follows calls by both parties for the actors to return for recordings, following the start of their illegal strike,” the statement read.

The week-long strike was the second by the ‘Generations’ actors who were ordered to report to work or be fired.

The actors refused to go to work despite the second ultimatum, claiming they were being exploited and that they did not want to work as struggling actors. But despite the entire striking cast who are no longer on the payroll, the producers went on to assure the public that measures have been put in place to ensure the future of ‘Generations’.

The executive producer and creator of ‘Generations’, Mfundi Vundla, has confirmed that 16 cast members have now been fired with immediate effect.

The dispute between the actors, the South African Broadcasting Corporation and Vundla has been ongoing for about a year. “We urged them to come back to work and record while we were sorting all outstanding issues and they refused and we let them go. That’s it, finish and klaar.”

The list of fired actors include Sophie Ndaba (Queen), Menzi Ngubane (Sibusiso), Seputla Sebogodi (Kenneth), Katlego Danke (Dineo), Thami Mnqolo (Senzo), Zolisa Xaluva (Jason), Winnie Ntshaba (Khetiwe) and Slindile Nodangala (Ruby). The list also includes Zenande Mfenyana (Nolunthu), Thato Molamu (Nicholas), Anga Makubalo (MJ), Mandla Gaduka (Choppa), Patrick Shai (Patrick), Atandwa Kani (Samora) as well as Nambitha Mpulwana (Mawande).
