The Ministry of Environment, Forestry, and Tourism has procured a borehole pump and generator to come to the rescue of 135 hippos stranded in the Zambezi region.
The equipment is worth N$66 531 and will pump water for the hippos, which are stranded in a thick mud pool in the Rungara stream in the Mutikitila area.
Ministry spokesperson Romeo Muyunda on Wednesday said the ministry successfully installed the borehole last week, and water levels have increased.
“The water level has risen, providing hope for the stranded hippos. The preservation of these hippos is very important as they are a source of revenue for the communities nearby through tourism and sustainable hunting,” he said.
Currently, there are an estimated 4 000 hippos in the Zambezi region.
