Steenkamp hails 46% boost in youth, sport budget

Education, Innovation, Youth, Sport, Arts and Culture minister Sanet Steenkamp in her budget motivation in the National Assembly this week hailed a boost in the government’s budget allocation for sport, youth and national service of N$1.26 billion.

Steenkamp said the allocation marks a 46% increase from the previous year, reflecting the government’s deepened commitment to youth empowerment and sports development across Namibia.

“This budget is a critical instrument in realising our vision of a dynamic youth population and a thriving national sports sector,” said Steenkamp.

“It speaks to the importance we place on young people as the backbone of national development.”

Of the total budget, 60% is dedicated to operational expenses. The lion’s share of this, which is 63%, will go to sport development, which includes investments in performance, talent nurturing and infrastructure.

Steenkamp said that the goal is to improve competitiveness and participation from community to elite level.

“Allow me to extend my thanks and sincere appreciation to the teams of the Ministry of Finance and that of the National Planning Commission for the effort in enabling the finalisation of this budget,” she said.
