Education minister Sanet Steenkamp says she will ensure that government-subsidised tertiary education is of good quality.
She was speaking to Desert FM on Friday afternoon, one day after president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah announced that “fees had fallen”.
“I can reassure you that public universities and the technical and vocational education and training system are all actively involved in these discussions.
“We must revisit and uphold academic standards across the board.
“Many have raised concerns about the role of private universities and colleges – particularly if government institutions cannot accommodate every prospective student.
“To address this, we will reprioritise fields of study and strengthen education from the basic level through to higher learning,” she said.
Steenkamp said the ministry’s goal is to ensure that everyone employed in education delivers quality teaching, “because education is a true public good”.
“These conversations will be ongoing, and we will keep the nation informed about our progress.
“In particular, we will review our current inclusive student loan scheme and refine our funding model to support the vision we all share for a stronger, more accessible education system,” she said.
The minister presided over her first graduation ceremony of University of Namibia students on Friday.
