State-of-the-art dialysis centre opens in city

WINDHOEK’S first private Kidney and Dialysis Centre was opened recently, offering patients with kidney failure 12 dialysis machines in comfortable surroundings.

The centre was equipped with the latest technology in dialysis machines by the German multinational company Fresenius Medical Care. Patients with kidney failure have to undergo a three- to four-hour-long dialysis session twice a week.Uncontrolled high blood pressure or hypertension is regarded worldwide as the most common cause of end-stage kidney failure.More recently, diabetes mellitus is also becoming a major cause of kidney failure.Internationally about 100 people per million require dialysis.This means that in Namibia an estimated 200 people are in need of regular dialysis.The public health service provides dialysis services on a very small scale.The Windhoek Central Hospital recently acquired two dialysis machines under an assistance agreement with Finland.Patients with kidney failure have to undergo a three- to four-hour-long dialysis session twice a week.Uncontrolled high blood pressure or hypertension is regarded worldwide as the most common cause of end-stage kidney failure.More recently, diabetes mellitus is also becoming a major cause of kidney failure.
