StArt Art Gallery officially launches ‘StArt @ The Wolfshack’ with an exhibition titled ‘Inside the Room’ by Namibian textile artist Laimi Mbangula on Thursday, 28 September at 18h00.
Mbangula is a graduate of the College of the Arts. Having always loved textile design and production, Mbangula’s artistic process draws from her relationship with herOshiwambo culture, and her concern that “we are very fast losing essential pieces of our customary lives and that we are relying more and more on shop-bought items”. The artist works with natural and synthetic dyes and meticulous stencils to hand-print on fabric.
Saying that “our roots and our traditions are a big part of our identity”, Mbangula uses her stencils to reference the traditional utensils used in her culture, explaining that “when I see these tools are no longer being used, I feel as if I am losing a part of my identity and my connection to the past.”
Helen Harris and Gina Figueira are the founders of StArt Art Gallery. They were both born and grew up in Windhoek, Namibia. Figueira received an honours degree in Fine Art (Sculpture) from the Rhodes Univeristy in 2015. Harris graduated with an honours in Fine Art (Sculpture), with a third major in Anthropology, in 2014 from the University of Cape Town.
Since then both have worked actively in the Namibian art world, curating exhibitions for the public and private sector. Start Art Gallery is a product of their shared vision for the future of Namibian art.
StArt @ The Wolfshack is also available as a venue for hire for private or corporate events.
