Stars honours its best players for 2005

AFRICAN Stars football club awarded its best players for the season at a glittering function in the capital recently.

The team named their wing back, Andrew Tjahikika, as the Player of the Season, while he also collected the Most Valuable Player award on the evening. Tjahikika has exceptional defensive skills and has greatly contributed to the survival of the team as it avoided the relegation chop last season, after it was speedily heading downward midway through the first round. His presence in defence for Stars has shown that he can be an invaluable asset for the national team in future.Stars ended in mid-table (seventh) in what has become a customary position for them over the years.Last season, Stars, led by former Liverpool coach Bernard Kaanjuka and Manase Katjivena as his assistant, managed to swing a total of 11 matches into their favour, while they went down ten times in their total of 30 matches. They went through nine stalemates in total.Red-hot striker Litombo Brouwers who has initially taken over the scoring duties from former Stars frontman Nico Andima, emerged as the Top Goalscorer of the Season.Brouwers, originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), has become an instant hit with the Stars supporters and his aggressive and rather opportunistic nature to score goals has given him the edge over Andima who for most years was the leading scorer of the team. The award for Most Improved Player was shared between Pat Uanivi and Boetietjie Seibeb. The two youngsters are highly talented and served the club well, while Seibeb made it to the senior national level last this year.Seibeb was drafted into the Brave Warriors squad by Max Johnson after he impressed in both the league and cup competitions and played his full international against Botswana in a Cosafa Castle Cup match on April 16 this year.Prior to that, he turned out for the national side in friendlies against Lesotho (away) and a selected side from The Namibian Newspaper Cup during the Easter weekend in Mariental. The award for the Dedicated and Longest Serving Player at the club went to midfield general Charles Hindjou.Hindjou has been a rock for the side in both good and bad times and has played an important role in keeping the morale of the players high, by consistently showing an undying spirit even on the brink of defeats. The soft-spoken Hindjou, who can be used in attack and defence, has a long career of injuries, but has proven an irreplaceable force when he is at his best.African Stars have not won a major cup competition in over ten years and are yet to land the league title. Each season, Stars has mixed results on the field of play and the combination of players has not done the trick for them. The team has struggled to reach even the semi-final stages of major championships in years, but management believes that the team still has the spark and needs the support of all its fans.Without a credible sponsor, Stars have also not had the benefit to compensate its players to perform to the maximum like teams such as Civics, Ramblers, Tigers and Blue Waters. But the saddest thing is that their support base has dwindled due to the poor results. This season should be the ultimate to turn around the tide for a team that is managed by top business personalities and legal minds of note.Tjahikika has exceptional defensive skills and has greatly contributed to the survival of the team as it avoided the
