Archrivals African Stars and Black Africa provided another classic encounter in a thrilling goalless draw on Wednesday night and although there were no goals, there was lots to savour in an enthralling contest.
In a fast-paced game of thrills and spills and attacks and counter-attacks, both teams had numerous chances but could not round them off.
The result leaves Stars six points clear of Black Africa at the top of the log, with seven matches left to play.
A crowd of about 3000 fans turned up for the match and they were not disappointed as both sides gave it their all.
BA came out attacking with Ananias Gebhardt and Willy Stephanus making early inroads, but Stars grew stronger as the first half progressed.
Bradley Wermann broke into the box after a fine run but shot over the bar, while Meraai Swartbooi came close with a fine curling freekick that Abongile Grootboom punched away.
At the other end, Stars’ keeper Athiel Mbaha spilled a shot by Ananias Gebhardt, but managed to collect it at the second attempt.
Stars pushed hard with Edwin Korukuve heading narrowly wide from a Freedom Purizacross, while Elvis Tjivasera just missed heading in a cross by Eslin Kamuhanga.
The high intensity continued in the second half with both teams attacking at will. Stars’ pacy winger Joslin Kamatuka made an immediate impact when he came on as a substitute with 25 minutes remaining, as he fed Korukuve in the box, but BA keeper Grootboom just managed to clear the ball away.
Stars missed another great opportunity when Wermann put Treasure Kauapirura clear in the box, but he slipped and the chance went abegging.
At the other end, Roger Katjiteo sent a Willy Stephanus freekick wide, while Muna Katupose and Heini Isaacks both had shots blocked.
The teams held on for a goalless draw that keeps the title race still wide open. Stars now lead the log on 53 points from 23 matches while BA are second on 47 points from 23 matches.
