ATHLETES from all over the world have been streaming into the Athletes’ Village, with many famous world stars having been spotted among them.
The Brazilian soccer star Hulk, who has been linked with moves to London clubs Chelsea and Tottenham, was the centre of attraction and was shadowed by three photographers snapping away to cover his every move in the village. Other athletes from Australia and the United States also had large followings, while a number of South African athletes appeared relaxed and in a confident mood amidst all the hype. South African swimmer Charl Crous said they were hoping to do well. Namibia’s other athletes will join the team in the coming days. Cyclist Dan Craven was due to arrive on Monday evening, while 400m athlete Tjipekapora Herunga will arrive today. Tomorrow, Namibia’s two boxers Mujandjae Kasuto and Jonas Matheus will arrive from Cuba while shottist Gaby Ahrens will fly in from Namibia. Mountain biker Marc Bassingthwaighte is expected to arrive on Friday, while the two marathon athletes Beata Naigambo and Helalia Johannes will arrive on Tuesday, July 31.Meanwhile, the flag-raising ceremonies have started taking place at the International Plaza in front of the Athletes’ Village with several countries’ flags being raised daily. The ceremonies have been colourful and imaginative, with volunteer dancers dressed up in carnival attire, dancing to musical scores including ‘Bicycle Races’ and ‘We are the Champions’ by Queen, before each country was welcomed and their anthems played. Namibia’s flag-raising ceremony was due to take place yesterday evening. Some of the 20 000 expected media practitioners are also streaming in to the huge Main Press Centre which is situated in Stratford in eastern London.
