Squash Business League aims for flying start

THE much-anticipated Trustco/Legal Shield Squash Business League aims for a flying start on July 4, despite a delay due to extensive renovations to the Wanderers Squash Club courts.

The changing rooms and entertainment facilities at the courts were completed recently and the teams that entered for this year are raring to go. This year, the business league will be presented as a joint project of the Wanderers and Klein Windhoek Squash Clubs, organisers said in a statement recently.”When the jointly presented league was introduced in 2005, Legal Shield became the main sponsor and for 2007, the league will be co-sponsored by the parent company Trustco,” the statement read. This year, there will be seven teams competing for top honours, compared to eight in the past two years.Despite that, the organisers are happy that there is an increase in player numbers per team to accommodate the high growth rate in the number of women playing squash in Namibia, something the organisers feel is very promising for the future of the sport.”This year, the total sponsorship received from Trustco amounts to N$30 000, which is a huge boost to a small sport like squash.Of these funds, N$10 000 will be allocated for the development of squash in Namibia. The funds will be handed to the Namibia Squash Association for their existing development projects throughout the country,” the statement said.It said a further N$5 000 will go towards the yearly Legal Shield Doubles tournament , which has increased the popularity of the rare game of squash doubles in Namibia. The rest of the money will be used to cover the running costs of the league. The teams that entered for the 2007 Squash Business League is a mix of old and new names. The defending champions, Squash Academy, will be there to try and make it two in a row, but they would be expecting stiff competition too.Other teams from last year include Road Signs, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, Trustco and SuperSport. The two new entrants are Dimension Data and the Institute of Open Learning. The league will be concluded on the weekend of October 3 and 4 and the prize-giving ceremony will be held on October 11.This year, the business league will be presented as a joint project of the Wanderers and Klein Windhoek Squash Clubs, organisers said in a statement recently.”When the jointly presented league was introduced in 2005, Legal Shield became the main sponsor and for 2007, the league will be co-sponsored by the parent company Trustco,” the statement read. The league will be concluded on the weekend of October 3 and 4 and the prize-giving ceremony will be held on October 11.
