Spoilers go top of Khomas second-division league

SPOILERS Football Club spoiled the party for early pacesetters, Monitronic Success College, in a very tense and intriguing Khomas Region second-division match at the Katutura Youth Complex on Sunday, in a game that saw one player of each side sent off.

Spoilers sent the ‘college boys’ crashing to their first defeat of the season when striker Ricardo Blauw scored the only goal of the afternoon with a free header in the 44th minute. No-nonsense referee Matthew Gotlieb, who had a busy day, showed Spoilers’ Efraim Geingob a red card before sending the league’s leading goal scorer, Belle Mbahuurua of Monitronic, for an early shower after the in-form striker picked up his second yellow card. The result means Monitronic, who were on top of the log standings before Sunday’s match, are now second, three points behind Arcadia Football club, the only team that still has a 100 per cent unbeaten record.Arcadia gained pole position after beating Windhoek United 2-0 on Saturday before seeing off former premiership club Young Ones 4-0 on Sunday. In the other matches played over the weekend, Young Ones beat Golden Rivers 2-1 on Saturday.Kingston United and Spoilers drew one-all and Monitronic College saw off a stiff challenge by Red Fighters, beating them 3-1.Ongete United were beaten 3-1 by Impala Chiefs in an ill-tempered match that also saw two players of both sides sent off.On Sunday, Ongete had a change of fortune when they thumped Falcon 4-0 to conclude their weekend assignments.Golden Rivers, who hail from Donkerhoek in Katutura, anchor the log standings after their dismal start to the league in which they have conceded 13 goals and only managed to score three goals. On Sunday, they were beaten 2-1 by Windhoek United and they are one of two teams without a win this season. The other team without a win is Unam Football Club. The University of Namibia side had their weekend matches postponed because they were involved in the Hansa Pilsener Cup preliminary playoffs at Karibib, where they lost to Walvis Bay outfit Desert Boys 3-4 on penalties after the match ended in a 2-all draw in normal time.Meanwhile, several first- and second-division teams will be involved in the Hansa Pilsener Cup this weekend at Gobabis. The competition will be held at the Legare Stadium and the winners will be going through to the quarter-finals.The quarter-finals will be played in Rundu on February 17, while the semi-finals are set for the Mokati Stadium in Otjiwarongo on March 17.The venue for the final has not been decided yet, but the organisers have short-listed Mariental and Walvis Bay.The tournament is sponsored by Namibia Breweries Limited (NBL) to the tune of N$500 000.No-nonsense referee Matthew Gotlieb, who had a busy day, showed Spoilers’ Efraim Geingob a red card before sending the league’s leading goal scorer, Belle Mbahuurua of Monitronic, for an early shower after the in-form striker picked up his second yellow card. The University of Namibia side had their weekend matches postponed because they were involved in the Hansa Pilsener Cup preliminary playoffs at Karibib, where they lost to Walvis Bay outfit Desert Boys 3-4 on penalties after the match ended in a 2-all draw in normal time.
