Spinners in motor sport awarded

FOR the first time in Namibian motorsport, spinners were awarded for their performance and commitment to the development of spinning in Namibia.

This is an achievement, said the president of the Namibia Motor Sport Federation (NMSF), Daniel Tjongarero.

Tjongarero, who was officiating at the annual prize giving ceremony over the weekend in Windhoek, praised the development and growth of the sport despite economic hardships.

“As a grassroots code, go-karting is slowly becoming the largest motoring (sport) code,” Tjongarero said, referring to the grassroots development currently under the wings of Bradley Ferreira, who has already started to roll out the programme in various regions.

Another motorsport code is spinning, which for the first time saw three spinners awarded trophies for their contribution on the tracks.

There are talks underway to take Botswana spinners under local wings to host more competitions between the two countries, however, this is still in the initial phase and Namibian spinners can look forward to bigger things to come.

When it comes to Motocross (MX), Tjongarero said the sport is also growing and referred to the increase of participants in the various categories.

“With an average of 45 entries and a healthy contingent of junior riders and a separate women’s class, MX is definitely growing, riding schools are available and well supported, so the standard is picking up,” Tjongarero said.

There is also a bright future for local motor sport, as a MX and a go-kart team will represent Namibia in South Africa and Europe later this year.

There are currently 12 motorclubs across Namibia affiliated under the NMSF, and the growth is evident by the increase of national and daytime licences issued, Tjongarero said.

The increase of national licences from 165 during 2021, to 252 during 2022, shows resilience, commitment and the drive to grow the sport, he said.
But the dream is to turn the almost 300 day licences into national licences, Tjongarero said.
