Speak out against gender violence – Namises

HUMAN rights activist and director of Woman Solidarity Namibia, Rosa Namises has urged Namibians to break the silence and speak out on gender based violence issues.

Addressing the community members of Okahandjapark in Windhoek yesterday on the commemoration of 16 days of activism campaign against gender violence, Namises said silence promotes violence.

“If we want to provide a safe and sound future to our loved ones, breaking the silence is the only way that will free the nation from gender based violence,” said Namises.

She emphasised that being unable to tell stories of gender violence as victims is a living death and sometimes a literal one.

“Never be afraid to raise your voice for honesty and truth as well as compassion against injustice,” she said, adding that stories save lives, hence victims of gender violence should speak out to end the violence.

The non-government organisation, Lifeline/Childline Namibia, hosted the event.

The activism campaign is an annual international event that aims to spread awareness to prevent violence against women and girls.

It starts on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and ends 16 days later on 10 December, which is International Human Rights Day.
