Spar workers in the North demonstrate

ABOUT 32 employees of Dr Frans Indongo’s Continental Spar supermarkets at Oshakati and Ongwediva held a peaceful demonstration in Oshakati on Sunday morning to demand better working conditions.

In a petition read on their behalf by John Nangolo, the workers demanded a recognition agreement, higher salaries, pension, death and transport benefits as well as staff discounts at the shops where they work. They also demanded that Dr Indongo negotiate retrenchment packages for employees at Continental No 1 shopping centre with the Namibian Food and Allied Workers’ Union (Nafau). They wanted to hand over the petition to Louis Botha, the General Manager of Continental Enterprises, but he was not available.Instead, the petition was given to Nafau’s Chief Organiser in the Oshana Region, Joel Constantinus, to hand it over to Botha. The workers said they had made repeated efforts to talk to Indongo about looming retrenchments, but had received no response.
