The organisers of the Spar Ocean View Qualifier Race have announced that the event is set for 7 February at Ocean View in Swakopmund from 06h15 to 07h30.
Essie Herbst ,the event coordinator said the race is a community road-running event designed to promote healthy lifestyles while offering competitive runners an opportunity to qualify for larger national races.
Herbst said participants can expect a well-organised road race, community engagement activities, and strong support from sponsors and volunteers.
“The event will cater for both competitive runners and recreational participants, creating an inclusive sporting experience. The event promises a vibrant atmosphere of fitness, community spirit and competitive running, attracting athletes and residents from across the region,” Herbst said.
Herbst said the race has its roots in the long-standing Batman Race, a well-known community event in Ocean View. Herbst said over time, it evolved into the Spar Ocean View Qualifier Race, reflecting growth in scale, professionalism, and sponsorship support while retaining its strong community identity.
“The event is open to the public, including competitive runners, social and recreational runners and community members who wish to walk, support, or volunteer. The main aims of the event are to promote health, wellness, and active living within the community. The race encourage youth and community participation in sport. The platform provide a recognised qualifying platform for competitive runners,” Herbst said.
Herbst said unlike many races, this event is deeply embedded in the Ocean View community. Herbst said it is not just a run, but a community celebration that blends sport, development, and social impact.
“The qualifier status adds value for serious athletes, while the welcoming atmosphere makes it accessible to first-time runners. Events like this play a vital role in uplifting communities, fostering discipline among young people, and promoting long-term health. Community support and participation are key to ensuring the continued success of the race,” Herbst said.
