South African tourist brutally killed

A NOORDOEWER farmworker appeared in the Karasburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday on a charge of murdering a South African visitor to Namibia at a camping site on Sunday evening.

The Police yesterday identified the murdered man as Mr R Ingram. He was 68 years old, and was a South African national who was on a visit to Namibia.Ingram was stabbed twice in his chest and three times in his throat, which was “severely cut”, Police spokesperson Warrant Officer James Matengu said yesterday. He was killed between 23h00 and 24h00 on Sunday in the tent where he was sleeping at the Abiqua camping site near Noordoewer, Matengu said. The alleged killer was arrested the next day.He is Manfred Matuzee (29), who is reported to be employed on a farm in the Noordoewer area, Matengu said.He related that it was suspected that after Ingram had been murdered, the killer took the keys of the Nissan pick-up in which Ingram was travelling and tried to make a getaway in the vehicle. The bakkie, however, got stuck some 100 metres from the camping site and was abandoned by the culprit, according to Matengu. He first set it on fire, though, and the car burned out completely.Matuzee was arrested at about 10h00 on Monday.Matengu said he had been tracked to a spot next to the Orange River, where he was taken into Police custody.Matuzee appeared in the Karasburg Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Valmary van Rooi yesterday. At this stage he is facing charges of murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, theft of a motor vehicle and malicious damage to property.Public Prosecutor Carlo McLeod asked for the case to be postponed to April 13 so that Matuzee could apply for legal aid in the meantime.Magistrate Van Rooi ordered that Matuzee will remain in custody until April 13.He was 68 years old, and was a South African national who was on a visit to Namibia.Ingram was stabbed twice in his chest and three times in his throat, which was “severely cut”, Police spokesperson Warrant Officer James Matengu said yesterday. At this stage he is facing charges of murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, theft of a motor vehicle and malicious damage to property.Public Prosecutor Carlo McLeod asked for the case to be postponed to April 13 so that Matuzee could apply for legal aid in the meantime.Magistrate Van Rooi ordered that Matuzee will remain in custody until April 13.
