Sonja Smith to continue in journalism as parliamentary dream falters

Sonja Smith

Award-winning investigative journalist Sonja Smith has pledged to continue her work in journalism after her bid to enter parliament through the Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) fell short.

PDM, which suffered a significant loss in the 2024 presidential and National Assembly elections, secured only 5 seats, leaving Smith, who was listed 11th on the party’s parliamentary list, without a spot in the legislature.

Smith said her recent recognition at the Editor’s Forum of Namibia (EFN) Journalism Awards reaffirmed her path in journalism.

“Given my recognition at the just concluded EFN Journalism Awards, it appears that journalism is not done with me just yet. I shall continue freelancing both locally and internationally, just as I have been doing the past six years,” Smith said.

She pledged to maintain her focus on investigative reporting and holding power to account through journalism.

“Namibians would expect me to continue reporting and bringing to light issues that are concealed and hidden with my impactful investigations,” Smith said.

Smith has been recognised for her journalistic work both locally and internationally.
