SOEs must perform or make way – Amutenya

Willem Amutenya

Swapo parliamentarian Willem Amutenya says state-owned enterprises (SOEs) must perform or make way.

Amutenya said this on Wednesday during the debate on the appropriation bill after it was tabled on Tuesday by finance minister Ericah Shafudah.

Shafudah stated that the government recorded low execution rates of capital projections totalling N$826.4 million.

“It is high time we stop carrying underperforming SOEs who keep betraying the hopes of the people and unemployed youth. We must draw a line to SOEs, and they must perform or make way,” Amutenya adds.

He said the over 2 000 jobs in education and health must be filled without delay, and bureaucratic red tape must not be allowed.

This comes after the education sector was allocated N$814 million and the health sector N$185 million.

Amutenya warned parliamentarians that shifting the calendar to review the appropriation bill would only lead to more delays in the allocation of much needed funds for the health and education sector, adding that the review is a lifeline and requires urgency to pass it without delay.

Amutenya stated that opposition parties have asked for a postponement on the appropriation bill.
