It was a sobering day for Namibia’s bowlers in Cyprus as both men and women tasted defeat at the Atlantic Senior Fours competition, at the Athena Beach Hotel in Paphos.
After losing to England B, but then bouncing back to edge out the Czech Republic on day one, the quadrumvirate of Val Gallagher, Herriette Partridge, Antoinette du Plooy and Truda Meaden headed into day two in the women’s fours in confident mood, but were brought down to earth, and in some style, by Jersey A who had also won and drawn one of their opening two matches.
Meaden’s team never got to grips with the rink or the conditions as they laboured to a heavy 35-3 loss, a margin of defeat that may prove costly at the business end of proceedings when shot differences will come into play.
For the men of Petrus du Plooy, Michael Rumsey, Karl Hartmann and Johannes Jacobs, it was a case of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory as they faced the might of Scotland in the last session of the day under the floodlights.
Things had been pretty tight throughout, but Namibia had managed to carve out a 14-12 lead with two ends to play, but dropped a two to bring the scores level going into the final end, which had suddenly turned into a winner-takes-all event.
And it was the Scots who held their nerve to claim a big three and take the match 17-14 and leave Namibia thinking what might have been.
