Young female archer Hanné Snyman raised some eyebrows when she won the year-end archery shootout at SKW over the weekend.
Snyman, who is still only 12 years old, beat 22 other archers to win the event that was once again sponsored by Crown Build-It.
During the qualification round, all archers had to shoot a total of 72 arrows at distances that were in accordance with their age group standard. After that, the shooters were ranked accordingly for the elimination round.
The losers of the two first elimination rounds were directly moved to the fun shoot-out, which was created by tournament organiser Karola Woortman in order to allow all archers to continue shooting even if they didn’t make the final shoot-out.
The winners, on the other hand, progressed to the quarterfinal of the main elimination round.
Snyman won her quarterfinal 143-127 against Hendre van Eeden, after which she moved to the semi finals where she squared up against one of the tournament favourites, Jackson Engel.
In a hard fought match, Snyman kept her cool to eventually win the shoot-out 147-139 and book herself a place in the final against Louw Nel, who had won his semifinal match 143:141 against Ruan van Staden.
The final was a nail-biting affair as both participants displayed excellent shooting and at the end only two points separated them, with Snyman beating Nel 144-142.
Meanwhile, the bronze medal match between Engel and Van Staden was an even closer affair. After 15 arrows, the archers were locked at 139 points each. A single arrow shoot-off had to determine the winner and Engel finally won the bronze medal after beating Van Staden 9-8.
More great archery action came from the participants of the fun shoot. Christof Lange and Morné Meyer contested the final, which was eventually won 138-134 by Meyer. The third place went to Babette Taljaard, after she beat Connie Smit.
The last archery tournament of the year is scheduled take place on 28 December in Walvis Bay.
