THE Small and Medium Enterprises sector is proving to be one of the more successful ways to address poverty and unemployment and to stimulate economic growth in Namibia.
In 2004, the SME sector contributed about 12 per cent of the country’s GDP, while providing 20 per cent of all jobs in Namibia. In recognition of the importance of this sector to Namibia’s economy, Nedbank and the Polytechnic of Namibia in 2004 started training Windhoek-based SMEs in bookkeeping, financial planning and small-business management. The first 50 participants joined the programme last year, resulting in 26 participants graduating and receiving certificates earlier this month, confirming their successful completion of the various courses.
