SKW gain top spot

SKW gain top spot

SPORT Klub Windhoek moved into the top spot of the MTC Namibia Premier League with a narrow 1-0 win over bottom-placed Mighty Gunners at the SKW Stadium in Windhoek on Saturday.

The win puts SKW on 36 points, two ahead of African Stars who were not in action at the weekend because their match against Eleven Arrows was postponed due to players in the national team.Tigers failed miserably as they fired blanks at home when they were downed 3-0 by the visiting Oshakati City at the Hage Geingob Stadium on Saturday.Ramblers picked up three valuable points in their 2-1 win against Chief Santos at the Oscar Norich Stadium in Tsumeb. That win is still not good enough as they are still languishing in the bottom four of the league table.Orlando Pirates turned the screws on Hotspurs with a 3-1 victory, pushing the Windhoek side into the relegation zone at the Khomasdal Stadium on Saturday, while Black Africa came back impressively to draw 2-all against a fired-up Civics side at the same venue on Friday night.SKW replaced Stars at the top of the table through a first-half goal by Shaun Kamatuka and this makes them hot favourites for the league crown with only seven matches left for most of the teams.SKW coaches Lucky Kakuva and Rolf Beiter have done exceptionally well to transform the side into a winning unit, despite having a host of young players and no big names in the league.SKW rely heavily on their steady defence, effective midfield and opportunistic strikers and have since the start of the season, developed a mentality of making every attack towards the opposition count.Despite losing their former coach Richard Stark who opted out due to other commitments, SKW are well on course for their first league title and with the current determination and commitment from the players and the coaching staff, they can be assured of landing it.Meanwhile, Tigers slumped to a second consecutive defeat in the week after a narrow 1-0 loss to Pirates on Wednesday night and their current form leaves much to be desired despite bringing in former Brave Warriors coach Rusten Mogane to assist.Santos have now lost 11 matches, while they have only managed to rake in six points through one win and three draws. This scenario is a huge worry to especially the fans and places enormous pressure on the coaching staff, which has persistently complained of not having quality players and depth.Santos were promoted this season and if they fail to win all their remaining matches, they will find themselves in the first division again. corry@namibian.com.na
