Simataa issues directive for civil servants elected to National Assembly to resign

Secretary to Cabinet George Simataa has instructed executive directors and chief regional officers to make sure public servants who were elected in the 2024 National Assembly elections have resigned from their positions.

In a circular on Thursday, Simataa said these resignations should have been effective the day they were officially announced as elected.

Simataa gave the instruction of the resignations according to the Electoral Act, which says all civil servants elected to the National Assembly must resign from their positions.

“If the remunerated member referred to in subparagraph (i) is elected as a member of the National Assembly, the remunerated member is deemed to have resigned from the public service with effect from the date in which the results of the elections are announced,” the circular reads.

Civil servants who continued working after being elected to parliament will be required to pay back the salaries they received since the announcement of the results.
