Should the ‘Toy Story’ franchise have ended with Toy Story 3?

Following the release of the ‘Toy Story 5’ trailer, many people are expressing the opinion that the franchise should have ended with ‘Toy Story 3’.

After a seven-year hiatus, the ‘Toy Story’ franchise has unveiled the trailer for its fifth instalment. This new chapter introduces both new voice actors and a significant shift in the storyline: the incorporation of technology and the threat it poses to the traditional toys.

The trailer features Lilypad, a new tablet device voiced by Greta Lee. Lilypad arrives with disruptive ideas about what is best for Bonnie, the child.

Original toys like Buzz Lightyear, Woody, and Jessie perceive this technological newcomer as a threat to their very existence. The trailer also highlights the theme of technology overuse.

The toys are unhappy with the new iPad, which has captured Bonnie’s attention. As shown in the trailer, the toys feel that Lilypad is hindering their efforts to help Bonnie make friends.

Fans express that they have moved on from the show ever since the ending of the third sequel, and they feel that the franchise should not have continued, as the new sequels are ruining that perfect ending.

Released in 2010, ‘Toy Story 3’ began as Andy, then 17 and heading to college, accidentally leaves his old toys, Woody, Buzz and the rest of the gang, in a bag that was mistaken for trash. This error led the toys to an unexpected destination: Sunnyside Daycare.

The toys’ new daycare, which seemed like paradise, turns out to be a ‘police state’ led by the bitter, strawberry-scented Lotso, who confines them to the ‘Caterpillar Room’ with destructive toddlers. Woody, who had escaped, returns to orchestrate a high-stakes prison break.

Their escape culminates at a landfill, where the Aliens and their ‘Claw’ save the group from an industrial incinerator. Accepting that Andy has finally grown up, Woody arranges for the toys to be donated to a girl named Bonnie.

Many fans feel the Toy Story saga should have concluded when Andy gave his beloved toys to Bonnie, introducing them individually. After they played and Andy said his emotional farewell, he drove away, and Woody watched, saying, “So long, partner”.

To these fans, no subsequent story was necessary.

The continuation of the story, with Bonnie now playing with the toys, has thrilled some fans. Others are excited to see Buzz and Woody reunited, anticipating the continuation of their characteristic, endless squabbles.

Fans commented on X to express themselves regarding the new sequel. @LayOnbedL comments: “They’re ruining ‘Toy Story 3’s’ perfect ending, yet again.”
