NAMIBIAN shooters Gielie van Wyk and Gaby Ahrens participated at the South African Olympic Trap Championships held in Bloemfontein on April 11 and 12 as part of their preparation for the Commonwealth Games.
The Championships proved to be a major success for the athletes, with van Wyk ending four in the men’s division while Ahrens shot her way into the overall final with a shoot-off for the silver medal against the men, but she ended with a bronze medal. Ahrens shot 118/ 125 with 20 in the final, giving her an average of 23,6 / 25 clays per round. She beat her personal best and preparation goals are being met for the Commonwealth Games. Richard Thompson from SA won with a new RSA Record of 121/ 125 plus 22 in the Final, and Neels Bornman won Silver with a total of 117/125 with 21 in the final, beating Gaby in the sudden-death shoot-off.The Namibian shooters will be travelling to Italy and Germany in June and August to continue their preparation for the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in October.
