Shoe-lace strangling suspect behind bars after lover’s death

A 21-year-old Windhoek resident remains in Police custody after making a first court appearance last week on a charge that he murdered his girlfriend by strangling her with shoelaces last Tuesday.

Homateni Michael (21) made a first appearance in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court in Katutura on a charge of murder on Wednesday. According to a Namibian Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Kauna Shikwambi, Michael was arrested after he had gone to the Police to report to them that he had killed his girlfriend, Jacobina Sebulon, in the Havana area of Katutura on Tuesday evening. The Police reported on Wednesday that the 25-year-old Sebulon’s boyfriend had allegedly strangled her with shoelaces at Havana at about 21h30 the previous day.Shikwambi added on Friday that it is suspected that Michael and Sebulon had an argument, and that he then dragged her to a spot in the veld at Havana where he is claimed to have strangled her.Michael returned home after the killing, it is alleged, but it appears that his conscience was bothering him later on and that he then reported the incident, Shikwambi said. With his appearance in court, Magistrate Shilemba informed Michael of his rights to legal representation. At the request of Public Prosecutor Alpha Haihambo, the Magistrate postponed the case to March 7 next year for further investigations to be done and so that Michael can apply to be provided with legal aid.Michael will remain in custody in the meantime.According to a Namibian Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Kauna Shikwambi, Michael was arrested after he had gone to the Police to report to them that he had killed his girlfriend, Jacobina Sebulon, in the Havana area of Katutura on Tuesday evening. At the request of Public Prosecutor Alpha Haihambo, the Magistrate postponed the case to March 7 next year for further investigations to be done and so that Michael can apply to be provided with legal aid.Michael will remain in custody in the meantime.
