KEETMANSHOOP – With the increase in the population in the Karas Region, it is becoming inevitable that some unemployed rural and urban dwellers should be encouraged to start sheep and goat production as a self-employment strategy.
The Karas Regional Council, as one of its submissions for the Millennium Challenge Co-operation (MCC) financial assistance to the Millennium Challenge Account (MCA) Namibian Office, on Monday proposed the empowerment of about 200 established sheep and goat farmers in the region. Making the submission, the Regional Co-ordinator for Food Security and Nutrition Programme (FSNP) for Karas, Mark Mulenga noted that the overall objective of the project was to generate income “so as to improve household food security and nutrition through goat and sheep farming, which have a high return to cost”.”From a historical point of view sheep and goat farming is a viable social and economic enterprise, which will enable those who do not have any livestock to produce their own meat for consumption as well as for sale to raise income for basic household needs,” Mulenga said.A seed stock of about 2 000 sheep and goats would be needed to kick-start the project. The MCC is a United States government initiative aimed at reducing poverty by accelerating economic growth in developing countries.- NampaMaking the submission, the Regional Co-ordinator for Food Security and Nutrition Programme (FSNP) for Karas, Mark Mulenga noted that the overall objective of the project was to generate income “so as to improve household food security and nutrition through goat and sheep farming, which have a high return to cost”.”From a historical point of view sheep and goat farming is a viable social and economic enterprise, which will enable those who do not have any livestock to produce their own meat for consumption as well as for sale to raise income for basic household needs,” Mulenga said.A seed stock of about 2 000 sheep and goats would be needed to kick-start the project. The MCC is a United States government initiative aimed at reducing poverty by accelerating economic growth in developing countries.- Nampa
