Sharing a name with a legend: Jesse Jackson Kauraisa’s quest for civil rights legacy

Jesse Jackson Kauraisa

Local sport reporter Jesse Jackson Kauraisa, who was named after American veteran civil rights leader Jesse Jackson, says carrying his name carries a lot of responsibility.

“The fact that Jesse Jackson was vocal and active in the fight against racism and was an advocate for the black community is heartwarming,” he told The Namibian yesterday following the news of Jackson’s death.

Kauraisa (36), who was born around the time of Namibia’s independence, says it is of the utmost importance to carry the legacy of a great African-American.

He said his father, who gave him the name, used to follow politics closely back in the day.

Kauraisa says he has been following the late Jackson, admired his work and remains committed to serving the people through his profession.

“People must know that people like Jackson, Martin Luther King Jr, Malcom X and many other activists are the reason why black people are now able to enjoy the privileges they could not enjoy in the past,” Kauraisa says.

“I can only hope to have the same courage and faith as him to pursue my dreams.”
