South Side Chicago has been home to ‘Shameless’ fans for the last 10 seasons of the show where we became family with the Gallaghers and all the other colourful characters that decorate the neighbourhood.
At the end of season nine, fans were left in tears as the show ended on an emotional note for Fiona (Emmy Rossum), and not to forget that Ian (Cameron Monaghan) and Mickey (Noel Fisher) reunited in prison after a few years of being broken up.
Ten years of a series coming back season after season with more fire is astonishing, and what is even more pleasing to watch, is the growth and development of all characters involved. Debbie (Emma Kenney) is the head of the household now as she controls the funds Fiona left for her at the end of season nine; older brother Lip is a new father with the birth of his first son; Carl’s given up his dreams of being a soldier; and Liam is questioning how he is the only one in the family who’s black.
After a decade of turning out constant great storylines, ‘Shameless’ doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. Kicking off season 10, fans will soon remember the immodest nature of the show with Frank Gallagher, played to perfection by William H Macy, being back up to his antics – scamming, lying, stealing and always hacking up a plan to get money in his pocket.
The Gallaghers were looked out for by Fiona all their lives and her absence is missed in the house, as the dynamics have shifted with Debbie holding everyone accountable for their actions and lack thereof.
One of the biggest moments is possibly the reintroduction of Fisher’s character, Mickey Milkovich, who’s made an on and off appearance since season five, and of course the reignited romance with Ian.
The two find themselves roommates in a prison cell and sooner rather than later want to kill each other, until Ian’s early parole. Their relationship continues on a rocky road when both are finally out of prison, although there are a few pleasant surprises along the way.
This season of the show has a few rude awakenings, especially for Lip who struggles with the responsibilities of raising a child, all while portraying the harsh realities of the South Side community with raw and unforgiving truthfulness.
Other characters such as couple Kev and V, and Frank’s new best friend, Mikey O’Shea (Luis Guzmán) return to provide some much needed comedic relief as the audience is also distracted from their own lives.
The Gallaghers don’t disappoint in the latest season of the show, as the actors and characters have come to grow as one – and the on screen family dynamics, chemistry and love affairs appear all too real.
