Shalulile on the double

OKAMENYE … Peter Shalulile scored twice as Sundowns scorched Al Ahly 5-2 in their CAF Champions League Group B match on Saturday.

PETER Shalulile scored a brace for Mamelodi Sundowns in their 5-2 win over Egyptian giants Al Ahly in the CAF Champions League on Saturday, lifting his goal tally to 17 strikes in 23 matches across all competitions.

It is a remarkable tally for the Namibian ace, given that he has endured an injury- ravaged 2022/23 season.

However, since returning from a four- month injury lay-off in February, he has been firing on all cylinders.

On Saturday, he scored the fourth and fifth goals in the enthralling match, ensuring The Brazilians qualified for

the league quarter-finals with two group games to spare.

Marcello Allende opened the scoring for Sundowns before Al Ahly hit back via Mohamed Sherif. Themba Zwane then restored the Brazilians’ lead before Teboho Mokoena thrust them further in front.

Ex-Sundowns star Percy Tau reduced the deficit for the visitors from Cairo but Shalulile’s well-taken double dashed Al Ahly’s hopes of a comeback.

Masandawana now switch their focus to the South African Premiership, with a home match against RoyalAM tomorrow.

They will be back on CAF duty on Saturday away to Al Hilal of Sudan.

After this defeat, Al Ahly, the 10-time Champions League title-holders, are in danger of failing to reach the knock-out stages of CAF’s premier club competition.

Sundowns head Group B with 10 points, while Al Ahly are in third place with four points after both teams played four group matches.

The outcome also meant the Egyptian giants have not been able to break their duck in South Africa, after failing to win a match there over the past 22 years.
