Leevi Hakusembe Secondary School in the Kavango West region is facing a health and sanitation crisis as raw sewage is overflowing into hostels, classrooms, and teacher accommodations. The school’s sewerage system has been failing since 2010. Principal Amandus Hamutenya says teachers are buying their own pipes for repairs, while school workers face health hazards cleaning the sewerage machinery without protective equipment or hazard pay. Several government schools have come under fire over past weeks due to unhygienic conditions that have left some pupils sick, including the recent case at Maria Mwengere Secondary School in the Kavango East region and the !Oe#Gab Primary School at the Tubusis settlement in the Erongo region.
