SA music producer Bojo Mujo dies

The man behind hits like ‘Summer Rain’ and ‘Thando Lwami (Marry Me)’ died in the early hours of Saturday morning.

A family member of the hit maker posted the following announcement on social media: “It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our brother (and) son Jacky Lehlake, known to music lovers as Bojo Mujo. He passed peacefully in Pretoria (at) 05h00 (on) 31 January after a short illness surrounded by family.”

Bojo Mujo’s death comes as a double blow to the South African entertainment industry, coming on the same day as news of the death of Zimbabwe-born SABC Top Billing presenter Simba Mhere.

Although Bojo Mujo’s music was widely consumed in townships and rural areas, his talent was seldom recognised, especially in the mainstream media. But that seemed not to bother the multi-platinum seller.

“It does not bother me. Because I am not famous, I have the freedom to go wherever I want. I get recognition through my sales and gigs. Fame means I can be in a bad mood when I’m in public,” he said in an interview in 2009.

Our own Lady May also posted a message of condolence to the music producer on her Facebook page on Saturday afternoon. “Bojo-Lution! RIP! Gone too soon dear friend… No words… My dear friend Bojo Mujo’s music lives forever. I am very lucky to have worked with you dear friend… People love you and appreciate you, my boss… Your sound will live forever! You are a house music king and we love you,” she wrote, signing the post “your buddy, May”. She worked with Bojo Mujo on a hit song titled ‘Dana (Namibia Get Crazy)’.
