SOUTH Africa Academy u18 thrashed Namibia u18 45-0 to win the inaugural Capricorn Group Seven Rugby Festival at Windhoek Gymnasium on Saturday.
In an earlier group match Namibia gave a much better account of themselves, losing 35-24 to SA, but in the final there was only one team in it.
Namibia just couldn’t handle SA’s pace, and when the home team had possession, they could not break through SA’s committed defence.
Namibia, in fact, never got out of their own half as the South Africans dominated from the start.
The pacy Marnus Potgieter raced through for a try within a minute and from then on it was one-way traffic.
By halftime SA was already leading 28-0, while they scored a total of seven tries to complete a comprehensive victory.
SA captain Rikus Pretorius and Ruben Beytell scored two tries each, while Potgieter, Janco van Heyningen and Qamani Kota scored one try each.
The SA All Stars team came third after beating Germany 33-7 in the bronze medal playoff match, while Botswana beat Zambia 19-12 in the fifth position play-off.
WHS, meanwhile, won the u19 trophy after beating Windhoek Gymnasium 31-19 in the final.
In an exhilarating match, the two sides weighed up evenly and matched each other, try for try to take the score to 19-all shortly after the break.
WHS, however, finished stronger, scoring two late tries to win the trophy and sound a warning to their big rivals ahead of the upcoming schools rugby season.
In earlier group matches Namibia beat Botswana 38-0, Zambia 40-0, SA All Stars 19-14 and Germany 33-10, while South Africa beat Zambia 66-0, Germany 48-0, Namibia 35-24, Botswana 59-0 and SA All Stars 28-0.
