Ruberto Scholtz creates corona-inspired fashion

FASHION designer Ruberto Scholtz has tapped into his creativity in the midst of a difficult time with his killer new corona-inspired designs.

As someone working in the creative arts, Scholtz is continually looking for new ways to express himself.

“Honestly, I am constantly in the mood to create and develop. Basically the whole world has come to standstill due to this pandemic and people don’t dress up and go out anymore. Through the news we see how the world is basically short on masks and other resources to fight the virus,” he said.

He was keen to integrate a mask into his design for a dress to wear on a night out, and aware of the fact that we all need to keep safe at this time.

While inspiration may have come easy, Scholtz struggled to get the materials to execute his designs.

“All I had were off-cuts of material in various shapes and angles from previous dresses that I created. My first dress was a result of those off-cuts and the shape evolved from the shape of the off-cuts too. The colour is a soft tone and sparkled, adding to the elegant and sexy look I was going for.”

He believes it is vital to stay active during the pandemic, which is why he is using this time to experiment and push boundaries.

“With the lack of access to resources we need to start planning how we can come back from this when the pandemic has passed. At this point one has to become creative and use what you have around you. I have started creating dresses to keep the creativity flowing. I am also keeping busy with administrative things,” he said.

Scholtz said the lockdown has greatly affected the fashion industry and, in some instances, it has crippled operations quite substantially. Almost all of his work is based on life events such as weddings and graduations.

“Most of these events have been postponed or cancelled. This has resulted in a halt in operations for me and other designers, which means a loss of income. There is also the challenge of sourcing material to continue with work as shops have closed.”

Despite the challenges, Scholtz has promised that more designs can be expected from him in the near future. Follow him on social media to keep up with his activities.
