Rössing Uranium Mine is funding a second road safety intervention to improve visibility along the fog-prone Swakopmund-Arandis B2 route.
The donation of N$251 000 was handed over at Arandis on Friday.
The Swakopmund–Arandis B2 road is a key route in the Erongo region, supporting daily commuter traffic and mining-related transport between the harbour and the surrounding mines.
The road is frequently affected by heavy coastal fog, especially in the early mornings and late afternoons, reducing visibility for motorists.
Rössing Uranium general manager for asset management and projects Edwin Tjiriange says the intervention forms part of the mine’s long-standing support for infrastructure and community well-being.
“For the past 50 years, we have relied on this road to transport our employees, goods and services safely.
“Safe and reliable infrastructure is essential not only for our operations but for the broader community,” Tjiriange says.
Inspector Rudiger Beukes of the police’s traffic division in the Erongo region says the route presents serious safety challenges due to congestion and poor visibility.
“With the coastal weather conditions bringing heavy fog, visibility becomes a major concern. Driving during these times increases the risk of accidents,” he says.
Beukes says the installation of road studs would help to demarcate lanes more clearly, improve guidance for motorists and reduce risky overtaking at blind spots.
Roads Authority senior manager for the roads technical training unit Roger Ochs says the Swakopmund-Arandis route is an important economic corridor.
“Improving safety along this road benefits not only local communities but the broader economy,” Ochs says.
A contractor has already been identified, and installation of the road studs is expected to start immediately.
This is the second time Rössing Uranium has made a similar contribution on the same stretch of road, after a previous road safety investment in 2020.
