Romi gifts fans with new music

Rapper Romi recently released her EP ’11:11′ which has created a buzz on social media with visuals to her leading single from the EP getting close to 1 000 views in less than two weeks on YouTube.

Speaking to on the creative process of making the 10-track EP, Romi shared that production-wise she worked with producers Groovy Martin and Devitchi.

“I had completed a mixtape when I was introduced to them, I recorded few songs with them and I really liked the working relationship. I appreciate their style of production and the fact that we could work out a way to work together,” said Romi. She mentioned that she also makes beats as a hobby, and revealed that she produced most of the songs on her unreleased mixtape.

“Knowing the basics of music production helps me to understand the structure of a song. It also enables me to guide my producer towards the exact sound I would like to hear. It makes the communication between us very constructive,” she said.

On the meaning of name of the EP, Romi said that the origin of this idea is her song, ’11:11′. “In summary, it means ‘all the time’. I apply 11:11 to the three main themes in the EP which are motivation, positivity and optimism. So it is those three themes all the time in every aspect of my life,” clarified Romi.

She mentioned that the response to her music has been positive, stating that people were pleased with the music as she thinks a lot of people did not expect what she delivered. “I like that most people noticed the growth throughout the EP,” she said.

With her music placing her at the forefront of the leading female rappers in the country at the moment, Romi defines Namibian hip-hop as a culture which is growing in quality, quantity as well as overall support. She maintains that she is very excited for the future of Namibian hip-hop as she has personally listened to a lot of amazing work from local artists. “We fully support each other and the support is beneficial to all of us.”

Romi added that with ’11:11′, she hopes people will listen to the music and gain a different perspective on life. She stated that she wants her music to speak to the masses and that they will draw inspiration and healing from her songs. “It does not matter how hard or how far one has fallen. You can always find a way out. Rely on other people, learn to trust and know yourself. This way any problem seems a lot smaller,” said Romi.

Asked about when she plans on releasing a fully fledged album, Romi said that she is not in a rush. “These days I am learning to allow things to happen naturally. Just stay tuned to my social media,” she concluded.
