Rocky Crest to get N$12.5-million cemetery

The City of Windhoek has revealed the construction of a N$12.5-million cemetery at Rocky Crest.

In a statement released on Friday, the municipality says it is planning ahead to ensure residents have dignified resting places for generations to come.

“To meet future demand, the municipality has secured 21.5 hectares of land south of Rocky Crest Extension 8 for the development of a new cemetery,” the statement reads.

The project will be rolled out in phases, the statement says.

The work is being carried out by Dema Construction CC, while the design, layout, and civil engineering are handled by Lithon Consulting Engineers.

Construction began in September 2025 and is scheduled for completion by February 2027.

The municipality says Deneuve Schrader of Dema Construction has indicated that progress has been smooth so far, with the team confident it will finish ahead of schedule.

As part of the development, the contractor has started creating access roads and digging trenches for water pipelines throughout the cemetery.

All internal roads will be paved with interlocks.

When complete, the cemetery will offer about 11 500 plots in total, with each plot providing space for approximately 40 graves.

A chapel will also be built on site to support funeral services, the statement says.

The area includes several protected tree species that will only be removed where absolutely necessary.

The Ministry of Environment and Tourism has granted permission for selective removal, and areas outside the construction zone will remain untouched to preserve the natural environment.

The project is overseen by the City of Windhoek’s engineer, Joseph Cupido, and section head Ketjizeere Corna, together with consulting engineer Willie Knouwds from Lithon project consultants.

The municipality says progress meetings are held every two weeks to ensure it stays on track and maintains high standards.
