THE total allowable catch (TAC) for rock lobster has been set at 180 metric tonnes for the 2019/2020 fishing season, while the TAC for hake will be 154 000 tonnes.
Announcing decisions taken at the Cabinet meeting held on Tuesday, the minister of information and communication technology, Stanley Simataa, told a media conference in Windhoek on Thursday that the TACs will come into effect on 1 November.
Simataa said the decision to set the lobster TAC at 180 tonnes – whereas it had been 200 tonnes during the 2018/19 fishing season – was taken to allow the lobster species, which is somewhat depressed, to recover in order to not deplete the resource.
“The TAC was approved for fishing rights that are still valid and not for new rights,” he said.
The Cabinet also approved a TAC of 154 000 metric tonnes for hake for the 2019/2020 fishing season, effective from the start of November, he added. The TAC for hake was also 154 000 tonnes during the 2018/19 fishing season.
