Rick and Morty go pear-shaped

THE latest iteration of ‘Rick and Morty’, the adult-cartoon sci-fi about an alcoholic grandpa, his grandson and their adventures across space and the multiverse, is just a few episodes in, and it’s already showing us exactly why it deserves its rating as one of the best shows out right now.

This fifth season works really well, even if it is absolutely insane to the point of being nonsensical at times, because it has a no-holds-barred approach to plot twisting, and an uncanny ability to turn even the smallest idea into something super zany.

What stands out the most is the already obvious difference between each of the characters now versus when the show first began.

Very few animated shows, especially those of which the episodes are not serial, manage to accurately capture the growth and transformation that people embody as time passes.

Rick and Morty’s writers, headed by Dan Harmon, have managed to keep this season extremely funny, outrageous and downright disturbing at times, proving more and more as they go along why they were renewed by Adult Swim (and Cartoon Network) for 70 more episodes just three seasons and 31 episodes into their run.

The season started off by finally addressing this strained relationship between grandfather and grandson, and how hanging out with Rick may have actually affected the boy.

Then things get a little weird and bizarre. You need to play some of these episodes over and over to prove to yourself you didn’t see them in a nightmare.

Whether they work or not it’s really up for debate.

If I were you I would check them out, and see the madness for myself.

Catch the latest season of ‘Rick and Morty’ on Netflix every Sunday.
