IT’S all about fabulous living and loving in South African smash hit ‘Happiness is a Four Letter World’ (2016).
Adapted from the Cynthia Jele novel of the same name and starring Mmabatho Montsho, Renate Stuurman and Khanyi Mbau, ‘Happiness …’ is this season’s local and lady-centric dramedy with a big heart.
Directed by Thabang Moleya and set in some seriously plush Jozi mansions, boardrooms and surrounds, ‘Happiness…’ revolves around the often decadent, sometimes dramatic love lives of a high powered businesswoman, an afro-chic gallery owner and a pampered home executive.
Serving up a smattering of comedic relief from Mbau, a lacklustre arch for Stuurman and shining when zooming in on Montsho and her fictional fiancé played by Tongayi Chirisa, ‘Happiness…’ is technically and narratively erratic but will certainly suffice for a fun girls’ night out.
Entertaining, easy and exploring themes of fidelity, love and classism, ‘Happiness…’ is plenty of what you have seen before but with a local twist, great outfits and some familiar faces.
