Review … ‘Deadpool’

RYAN Reynolds stars as the quick healing, profanity spewing, fourth wall busting anti-hero in Marvel’s ‘Deadpool’ (2016). A superhero movie that takes the mickey out of superhero movies while still being a total superhero movie.

Dark, funny, bloody and with a ton of penis jokes to swallow, ‘Deadpool’ is the family unfriendly origin story fans of the comic book character have been gagging for.

Starring Morena Baccarin as the love interest and Ed Skrein as the villian, the film tells the story of Wade Wilson. A loudmouthed mercenary who gets a pretty epic bout of cancer before a process of torture and general wickedness turns him into the scarred superhero of comic book legend.

Though the plot is as formulaic and as predictable as can be and its link to ‘X-Men’ is budget at best, the film is refreshing in its acknowledgement of genre’s clichés and overlapping stories. Unrepentantly hammy yet surprisingly watchable, Reynolds’ Deadpool is definitive, divergent and totally aware of being entirely contrived.

A solid introduction to one of Marvel’s most devious anti-heroes, see this if you want to see Reynolds stepping into a role as irreverent, snarky and classic as Van Wilder.
