Restriction on maize seeds lifted

The temporary ban on the importation of maize seeds from South Africa has been lifted with immediate effect, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform has announced.

The ban was initially imposed due to concerns following the detection of Goss’ wilt in South African maize seeds. Goss’ wilt is a serious bacterial disease affecting corn which is caused by Clavibacter michiganensis, subspecies Nebraskensis.

“In response, Namibia has reviewed and updated its phytosanitary import requirements to safeguard and reduce the risk of introducing this and other harmful plant pathogens,” agriculture ministry executive director Ndiyakupi Nghituwamata says.

All relevant stakeholders and members of the public are being asked to remain vigilant as the ban is lifted and adhere strictly to the new phytosanitary measures.

“Importers are specifically reminded that the movement of any maize seed consignments suspected of contamination remains strictly prohibited,” she adds.
