After screening the award-winning South African documentary five years ago, AfricAvenir Windhoek presents the rescreening of the winner of the Best Documentary at the Cape Winelands Film Festival 2011, ‘Afrikaaps’ by Dylan Valley (2010).
‘Afrikaaps’ explores the untold Creole history of Afrikaans, making use of hip-hop and humour. The film follows a group of local artists creating the stage production ‘Afrikaaps’ as they trace the true roots of Afrikaans to slaves in the Cape. The film reclaims and liberates Afrikaans from its reputation as the language of the oppressor, taking it back to the people.
It features musicians Jitsvinger, Kyle Shepard, Emile (black noise), Moenier Parker, Shane Cooper, Blaq Pearl, the powerhouse b-boy, Bliksemstraal, and the poetic genius of Jethro Louw.
The screening features special guest Ottilie Abrahams, principal of Jakob Marengo Secondary School. With 40 years experience in the education sector, Abrahams is known as a champion of people’s education in Namibia and an expert in language politics in Southern Africa, as well as a dear companion to the late Proffessor Neville Alexander, who features in the film.
The documentary will screen in Afrikaans/Afrikaaps with English subtitles at the Franco-Namibian Cultural Centre (FNCC) on Wednesday, 13 July at 18h30.
Entrance is N$30
