Many bakkie owners lock the vehicle but forget the canopy, as it needs manual locking with extra keys. That may soon be a thing of the past due to a simple device that deters theft.
A remote-operated locking system is now on the market. It protects the contents of the canopy and fits most well-known canopy brands.
Top Revs spoke to André Spies from Auto4x4Nam about the new South African product. The locks can be fitted by the company or bought as a do-it-yourself kit for bakkie owners who want to install it themselves.
Spies says the system pairs with the vehicle’s remote, so no extra keys are needed, however, keys are included for power failures to ensure access to the canopy.
The system also works on the tailgate. It is plug-and-play, with no cutting or drilling required.
Another benefit is that it can stay with the vehicle when sold, or be transferred to the owner’s next vehicle without causing damage.
Old locks are removed, new locks are fitted, and wiring is done neatly so no wires hang loose in or around the vehicle or canopy. Spies says the installation takes about half a day.
He suggests insurance companies consider offering the system to clients, as it helps prevent canopy theft and deters potential thieves.
The system is also recommended for medical and security emergency services, where quick access to equipment is critical.
Spies says payment options are available and more information can be found on their website at www.auto4x4nam.com.
He adds that the company offers other off-road products and advice, noting that many owners do not consider how extras like roof racks, suspension kits, and extra fuel or water tanks affect a vehicle’s dynamics, weight, handling and fuel use.
The system, however, does not guarantee theft prevention. If someone wants to break in, nothing will stop them, but the lock acts as a deterrent.
Regarding guarantee, Spies says the product is covered under warranty and clients do not need to complete extensive documents for an exchange, as they act in good faith.
