Rehoboth resident Olivia Louw created a Facebook group ‘KomHaalVernietNamibia’ for community members who want to donate items they no longer have any use for.
“Anyone can donate anything they don’t need anymore, so it is at their discretion to share it on the page and anyone in the group who responds to it and wants it can arrange to get it,” she says.
Louw says the group was formed after a personal experience.
“I saw there was a need for such a group at Rehoboth. As I was searching on Facebook, I saw there are various other similar groups for different places worldwide. . . I’m a new mom and felt awkward wanting to post my baby’s old clothes as a giveaway on selling type of groups,” Louw says.
She says the group is perfect for when someone wants to give away something as there is always someone in need somewhere.
“Many people at Rehoboth are unemployed and many live in poverty. This could help many to acquire some things that could help them. Anyone who wants to give something such as food, clothes, plants, household items, anything basically, except animals and medicine, can do so,” she says.
Louw is pleased about the group’s growth and is hopeful about the positive impact that it could have.
She says within less than 24 hours, the group garnered a following of 881 members.
Resident Sam Buys is pleased about the group, saying it is good to help each other.
“There are many people who often have things just lying around that they no longer have any use for, now they can give them to someone who really needs it. This group will make many people smile. This is the right way to start a new year,” Buys says.
