THE electrification of 200 house at Rehoboth’s Block G area will finally start after the groundbreaking last week.
The project was officially launched by National Planning Commission (NPC) Director, Professor Peter Katjavivi, and the head of Spanish Co-operation in Namibia, Alberto Quintana. The Spanish government is funding the electrification project to the tune of N$1 million. According to Quintana, the proportion of Namibia’s population living in informal shack settlements is high and on the increase. Quintana said estimates indicate that close to 130 000 households live in urban informal areas, and that 25 per cent of the Namibian population are affected. He said the electrification of the Rehoboth houses will ease the negative affects of urbanisation and will also improve the living conditions of the 200 households. Katjavivi said the electrification project will create potential for the town’s socio-economic development. Rehoboth Urban West Constituency Councillor, Theo Diergaardt, said Electro Repairs had successfully bid to implement the project costing N$1,1 million. Diergaardt said the Rehoboth Town Council will contribute N$250 000 to the project. He thanked the Spanish government and NPC for their contribution towards the realisation of the project.luqman@namibian.com.na
