Rehoboth was abuzz with excitement as the long-awaited 2025 Zonals Athletics Competition took centre stage at the town over the weekend.
The track and field competition, organised by Rehoboth High School (RHS) at rivals Dr Lemmer High School’s sporting grounds, saw intense battles between RHS, Dr Lemmer, /Anes Secondary School (ASS), and M&K Gertze High School (MKG).
In the end, Dr Lemmer made the most of their home turf advantage as they emerged zonal champions with 572 points.
M&K Gertze placed second with 472 points, followed by Rehoboth High on 408 points. /Anes finished fourth with 140 points.
M&K Gertze’s Jerad Nongo gave a standout performance, sweeping the boys 14-15 category with wins in the 400m run, javelin throw and long jump.
Despite his clean sweep, Nongo had mixed feelings.
“I am content with my performance, but I know I could have achieved a faster time in the 400m. I was aiming for a faster time,” he said.
Others who made notable displays included Julie-Ann Schuster (RHS), William van Wyk (MKG), Manfred Vatileni (RHS), Gerson Mungudu (DRL), Ricardo Grootdood (ASS) and Goraseb Michael (ASS).
The event’s success was down to months of planning and preparation, said Melissa van Wyk, one of the organisers at RHS.
“There were nerves, naturally, but because of good planning, everything went smoothly,” she said.
Dr Lemmer High School principal, Elwin Meintjies was overjoyed with his school’s victory and highlighted the importance of thorough preparation.
“We were seriously prepared. Some of our sportspersons even went to South Africa solely to experience [competition] at the international level, and that readiness paid off,” said Meintjies.
M&K Gertze High School principal Jason Isaaks was also pleased with how well the tournament was organised.
“I would like to thank the Rehoboth High School team immensely … They thoroughly deserve appreciation for organising such a great competition,” Isaaks said.
