Rape and murder suspect in Lüderitz court

Jared Munjanu (24) appeared in the Lüderitz Magistrate’s Court on Monday in connection with the murder, theft and rape of Gerome Helgrain (41).

The incident allegedly took place at Lüderitz in the //Kharas region a week ago.

The police arrested Munjanu on Friday.

He appeared before assistant magistrate Linda Nakale and his case was postponed to 20 October for formal bail and legal assistance applications.

Munjanu remains in custody.

The police report stated that Helgrain was stabbed with an unknown object, inflicting over 40 stab wounds all over his body, and that he was robbed of his cellphone and 43-inch (109cm) television set.

The television set and sound bar have reportedly been recovered.

Helgrain appeared to have been raped, the police report states.

//Kharas regional commander Marius Katamila over the weekend said a concerned member of the public reported to the police that Helgrain, who stays by himself, was last seen on Saturday night, and that his house was locked with the key not being inside the lock.

“The door was broken open, and the man was found lying on the floor beside the bed with multiple stab wounds. He was declared dead on arrival at Lüderitz State Hospital,” he said.
