A 19-year-old man accused of raping an eight-year-old boy at a village in the Kunene region over the past weekend has been remanded in custody.
This decision was made during an appearance by the accused in the Opuwo Magistrate’s Court on Monday, when magistrate Eden Amutenya ruled that the accused should remain in custody until a next court appearance.
Chief inspector Vehangaiza Hindjou Ruiter, the head of community affairs in the Namibian Police in the Kunene region, informed Nampa on Tuesday that the 19-year-old male allegedly raped the eight-year-old boy after finding him in a field near his residence at Otjite, a village in the Kunene region, on Saturday.
“While this was happening, the victim’s mother returned from the water point and saw her son lying down with someone whom she initially thought was a child from the neighbourhood playing with him,” Ruiter said.
The woman realised what was happening as she got closer to the scene and screamed for assistance, prompting a group of villagers to come to her aid, Ruiter said about the incident that led to the suspect’s arrest.
