Rainy season starts

THE north-eastern and central parts of Namibia are set to be soaked for the next five days, as a tropical weather system from Angola, which caused the first rain drops of the season to fall this weekend, continues to bring much-needed rain for at least another five days.

According to Professor Kobus Botha, a South African meteorologist, there is very good rain coming our way. The Namibian weather bureau confirmed that wet conditions are expected for the duration of the week. The weather changed from hot and humid to cloudy and rainy on Saturday and will continue to deliver welcome relief to the country from today until Thursday or Friday, according to Professor Botha’s weather modules. Sunday saw heavy tropical weather over the north-eastern parts of the country, including Tsumeb, Grootfontein and Rundu. The forecast for today, according to Botha, is rain in the central to north-eastern parts of the country. On Tuesday, it is likely that the rainy weather will spread towards the south. The rain is likely to retreat from the south and cover the central and north-eastern parts again on Wednesday. On Thursday and Friday, Botha says it is likely that the rain will move primarily across the north-eastern parts. All in all, it is good news for Namibia. Although this is Namibia’s ‘mini’ rainy season, with the main one due only in February, meteorologists say that Namibia can expect average to above-average rain in the next few months.Measurements taken across the country show that the highest rainfall was received in the far north-east over the weekend, with Katima Mulilo recording almost 20 millimetres. On Saturday, less than 1 millimetre, or just above, was recorded in areas such as Grootfontein, Otjiwarongo, Okakarara and Windhoek.
